Rolling Up Our Sleeves to Achieve Agenda 2030

How can we take concrete, measurable action to align and motivate an unprecedented amount of human resources towards Agenda 2030? I challenge us to consider the following four tactics that were highlighted during Impact2030 breakout sessions.

  1. Engaging employees – In order for companies to get their employees on board with initiatives, they need to understand the Sustainable Development Goals. Employees need to be equipped with materials for corporate social responsibility (CSR), and CSR experts need to educate and engage their employees from the top down.
  2. Sharpening the focus – Many companies tend to focus on too many areas, leading to fragmented efforts with limited results. Choosing and concentrating on a small number of initiatives empowers organizations to better track, measure, and make a greater impact.
  3. Maintaining momentum – We will not be effective unless we build momentum. This may include creating a database to track how different companies are working on the Sustainable Development Goals. A database would help companies become more active in IMPACT 2030, share sector-specific information, and foster ongoing collaboration on initiatives.
  4. Measuring impact – Measuring the success of initiatives is crucial to reaching desired outcomes. Therefore, we need to agree on a standard set of key performance indicators across initiatives and consistently capture and analyze data against objectives.

Mobilizing to Become Cities of Service

Jim Kenney, the Mayor of Philadelphia, emphasizes the need to bring the private and public sectors together by breaking down the wall between them. Cities of Service is a national non-profit organization that supports mayors and city chief executives in their efforts to engage local communities and residents, identify challenges, and solve problems together. Today, Cities of Service is comprised of over 215 cities in the US and UK, representing nearly 55 million people in 45 states, and more than 10 million people in the UK. Cities of Services teaches us that we don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Instead, we can share, collaborate, and learn from each other to repeat successful initiatives and affect positive change more quickly in each participating city.


Jamie Serino was formerly Director of Marketing for Blackbaud Corporate and Foundation Solutions groups.

Bringing nearly two decades of leadership experience spanning the private and nonprofit sectors, Jamie has developed and led transformational marketing and communication strategies in both B-to-B and B-to-C technology industries, including financial services, network security, CRM, Internet telephony and HR/Recruiting. He was instrumental in building the Vonage brand, growing the customer base from 10,000 to 2.5 million while helping the company through its IPO. He also led the centralization of communications and branding at SunGard in order to reposition the company for IPO/acquisition. Jamie began his career working with nonprofit organizations that served people with developmental disorders and mental illness.

Jamie holds a B.A. in psychology from Binghamton University. Committed to philanthropy in his personal life, Jamie has helped nonprofit organizations promote causes related to disaster preparedness, pediatric cancer, developmental disability, clean energy and ocean conservation, and currently serves as a Healing Arts Volunteer at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in his hometown of Morristown, N.J.
