Social Media, Fortresses and Free Agents with Danielle Brigida of National Wildlife Federation

If you’ve been around the non-profit social media scene for any amount of time you’ve probably heard of (or even met) Danielle Brigida from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). As the Digital Marketing Manager at NWF she responsible for running NWF’s social media program – Yes, the one that’s been talked about all over the web by such publications as USA TodayThe Nonprofit TimesFast CompanyWashington PostMashableGreenTalk Radio, and Fundraising Success Magazine.

Danielle was on a panel at SXSW led by Beth Kanter where they talked about “Free Agents and Nonprofits in a Networked World.

After their session I got some time to talk with Danielle about the world of social media for non-profits. Right around the 5 minute mark is where Danielle stats sharing about Fortresses and Free agents. Prior to that we’re discussing who NWF is, how NWF uses social media, and Danielle’s roll in the day to day operation at NWF.

    I have an organization called VISIONS that needs a fiscal agent due to the long period of time that it takes to obtain our own. Can you uoffer any resources?

    Very nice distinction, between fortresses and free agents. That fortress mentality may be what stops organizations from using social media well: Allowing the outside — free agents — is scary but good for the long-term health of the organization.
