Hal Williams

Hal Williams is senior fellow of The Rensselaerville Institute (TRI), an internationally respected educational center known as The Think Tank with Muddy Boots. He built the Institute from a small conference center to a leader in outcomes tools for foundations, corporations, and nonprofit organizations that solve a variety of critical social problems. Among Hal’s 200+ consulting clients are the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Duke Endowment, Greater Kansas City and San Diego Community Foundations, The Cities of Grand Rapids and Seattle, Verizon Foundation, Altman Foundation, and the Community Fund in England. His corporate consulting includes General Electric, Key Corp, TransWorld Entertainment, and Map Info. Hal is lead author of Outcome Funding: a New Approach to Targeted Grantmaking, now in its fourth edition and widely used by foundations and governments seeking to move from a funding to an investing paradigm. He also cofounded the national program School Turnaround with his daughter Gillian, now CEO of TRI. Hal served as lead consultant to a U.S. Presidential Commission and consults directly with governors, corporate CEOs, foundation directors, and other leaders. He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he founded that school's FM radio station and served as west coast director of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.
